If you went to Sunday school as a child, you may remember those felt Bible stories where little felt figures created stories on a sticky felt board. In recent years, those felt stories have found new popularity as a DIY craft and make a great gift for small kids.
You can easily create your own felt stories with a few pieces of felt and a plan. Paper sized sheets of felts can be purchased at any craft store and cut out to create entire scenes to be played out on a felt board. You can use cookie cutters, printed patterns from the Internet, or magazine cutouts to create any story you can dream up.
Your foam board can be a thick piece of poster board or other sturdy base. Using fabric glue or other adhesive, carefully glue a piece of white felt to the board for a sticky surface that will allow you to apply and reapply felt stories.
For the boy who loves dinosaurs, try making felt pieces of dinosaurs, jungle plants and rock props. You can cut out clouds, a sun and other common objects to go with any story. For your little princess, make her a princess story complete with castle, knight and horses.
The coolest thing about felt stories is that there is absolutely no limit to what you can create, and your kids can get hours of fun from them. They make excellent traveling toys too – quiet, easy to store and easy to fit on a lap.
