Crafting items out of beads and crayons may be something you associate with your childhood but, crafting as an adult is alot more fun than you would ever guess. Its a whole new craft world these days with new materials, innovations, and resources to bring out your inner artist.

As an adult, you may say that you don't have time for one more hobby with your already hectic schedule of juggling work, family, and a social life. Making a little time for creative expression, by cutting out television or happy hour, is time well spent. Yes, even for working adults and no, not just for little old ladies who have been knitting for the last 40 years.

The modern world is increasingly a hands-off, self-automated, pre-recorded, sterilized pre-packaged kind of place that leaves us feeling a little inhuman at times. Working with textures, colors, scents, sounds, papers, glass, clay, fabric, and paint gives our hands something to work with besides the computer keyboard and gives you a genuine feeling of well-being as you create and express your humanity with physical objects. Start by perusing a craft store or just picking up objects that catch your eye. Buttons, unique papers, colored pens, pieces of scrap wood, seashells, stones, unique vintage items. Designate a box for all of your special items so that they are all in one place. Find things that resonate with you and just keep gathering until you've got a good assortment of materials.

Instead of zoning out on television or a movie one day, sit down with your collection of special things and lay them out on the floor or table. Move them around, pair them up, match things, and let ideas come to you and don't try to qualify the ideas that come to mind. Just let the ideas surface and then write or draw them out on a piece of paper so you don't forget.

Spend time creating your special pieces alone or invite friends to join you. Its a wonderful weeknight or Sunday brunch party idea, too. Get your friends onboard and create items together for a common cause or interest. Culinary herb baskets, jewlery, dresser knobs, hats, handmade party invitations, stationary, calendars, paintings, collages, refurbishing old furniture, the possibilities are endless.

Crafting is a rewarding experience that gives back. Nourish your inner child and unleash the artist within by opening the doors of expression and creation. Invite those you love to join you and create the whimsies of today or the heirlooms of tomorrow. Seek out other creative people and join them by referring to the schedule of upcoing events at your local craft store, YMCA, community college, or artist's guild. Stay open to new ideas and once you start, you'll never want to stop!
