When we have a need in our home, it is so easy to make a quick jaunt to the nearest big box store to get whatever it is on our list. This is certainly quick and convenient, but most of the time, mass-produced items just lack that character and unique appeal many of us are looking for in our homes. For that reason, sometimes it is better just to make your own household items. Making your own is also a great opportunity to give your kids craft projects too.
There are so many household items that can be made by hand, from home décor to practical items that can be used around the house. You are limited only by your imagination. Remember, if it can be mass-produced, it can be made by hand, too. Some items require special equipment, but others can be made with supplies on hand and a dose of ingenuity.
A lampshade purchased from the thrift store can be hand painted to match your existing décor, while a coffee can can be covered with wallpaper, scrapbook paper or construction paper decorated by your kids to hold everyday items. Instead of buying a plastic tote to store frequently used items, cover a sturdy cardboard box with papers and decoration to create a unique container that looks great and can be replaced as your needs change.
Making our own is becoming a lost art and should be protected in the way endangered animals are. We need to keep these skills and talents to pass down through the generations, and making your own household items is a great way to remember how to be frugal and inventive.
