Fair Isle knitter gives Chanel the smack-down

Fair Isle knitter gives Chanel the smack-down

Chanel issued an official apology

When professional Fair Isle knitter Mati Ventrillon saw the knitwear in Chanel's latest fashion show in Rome, she was surprised to spot several of her own original designs in the collection. Fair Isle knitting designs are as distinctive as they are unique, and Ventrillon designs classic forms using traditional colors and patterns.

Forced to back down, Chanel acknowledged its error and issued an official apology. They blamed the plagiarism on their in-house textile specialists, and presumably those specialists have learned a valuable lesson about daring to cross a sharp-eyed knitter!

Ventrillon is a Fair Isle knitter in both senses. She lives on Fair Isle, one of the Shetland islands, and she professionally designs and knits Fair Isle sweaters. Currently her backlog for custom orders is 18 months long. And no wonder, given how gorgeous, unique, and authentic her sweaters are.

Nice try, Chanel! Next time don't pick on knitters - we're watching!
