I love to take advantage of the many summer crafts that my kids can take part in, such as kites, wind chimes and butterflies, but this heat wave left me with only one craft on my mind: a fan. Staying cool is tough when it remains above 90 degrees for a long period of time. The air conditioning units in my house don't get it as cool as a central air system would. A homemade fan surely couldn't hurt.
You will need the following items to make your fan:
- Scrapbook paper
- Colored duct tape
Follow these steps to make your homemade fan:
Choose a piece of scrapbook paper that has a design you fancy. My daughter prefers the ones with cute animals all over them, but I enjoy a scene of flowers.
Set the scrapbook paper in front of you so that it is longer horizontally than vertically.
Fold the scrapbook paper like an accordion from left to right, making folds every half an inch.
Hold the bottom 1 ½ inches together once you have finished making the folds. Staple with a stapler.
Surround the bottom 1 ½ inches with colored duct tape. They also have duct tape fashions now, so you can use a patterned piece of duct tape if you prefer. This gives your fan an attractive handle.
If you don't have any colored duct tape, you can use a hot glue gun to attach ribbon or a piece of fabric.
Instead of scrapbook paper, you can color a scene on a sheet of plain typing paper.
